Head shapes and socket dimensions in axes are very variable. Make sure you select the correct haft for the tool you are repairing.

Note the following:

  1. When shaping the haft to fit the socket, make sure you have the head the correct way round. This is not always obvious as some axes, such as Canadian axes have nearly symmetrical blades.
  2. Take your time with shaping and fitting. Axes take a lot of stress in normal use, and a well-fitted haft is essential. A correctly fitted head should rest on a flat surface as shown below.

  3. The general procedure is as for sledgehammers and mells. A large wedge will be needed, with a thickness of 10-15mm.
