Winches should be inspected, cleaned and lubricated at regular intervals. At least annually, they should be thoroughly examined by a competent person, usually a Tirfor dealer. Contact the manufacturers for the address of your nearest repairer. Never try to take a winch apart, as it contains extremely powerful springs. Slings, wire rope and other accessories should also be examined before each use, and subjected to the same examination routine as the winch.
The winch has shear pins which are designed to break if the load is too heavy, to prevent damage to the winch. Always keep a spare stock of pins.
