Reptiles, including adders, slow-worms and lizards are found in open woodlands, especially on sandy soils in southern England. They can be encouraged by providing open basking areas on sunny banks, or by the construction of hibernation sites. Dry stone walls, stone faced banks, piles of stones, compost heaps or piles of bark in sunny, sheltered locations may attract reptiles to hibernate. For details of constructing a hibernacula using hollow concrete blocks, plastic pipes and bark see Enact Vol 8 No2 (2000)*. Ponds in woodland areas will provide habitat for amphibians.
