These are mainly used by fencing contractors and farmers, but hire of a machine may make feasible a job which otherwise volunteer groups could not undertake. Machines must only be used by those people who have received appropriate training in their use, and have been assessed as competent.

  • Power auger. This is a hand-held machine for making post holes. Interchangeable augers allow various sizes of hole to be dug. Suppliers include Drivall and Stanton Hope.
  • Tractor-mounted auger. Various models are available which attach to the rear of the tractor. The auger is mounted on a long arm, to give access in awkward corners, over hedges or ditches.
  • Tractor-mounted post driver. This is the quickest and most effective way of driving posts into the ground.
  • Transport. Transporting materials to the site is often a very important factor, especially on upland sites. A tractor and trailer, or four-wheel drive vehicle and trailer are suitable for most agricultural land. All-terrain vehicles, which have a very low ground pressure, may be necessary on soft ground or steep slopes. Helicopters may be used for otherwise inaccessible mountain areas.
