Concrete posts
These are used mainly for chain link security fencing. Slotted posts are also available for use with concrete or wooden panel fencing. Concrete posts have the advantage of durability, but are heavy to transport and erect, and do not look appropriate in rural settings. They may be necessary where vandalism is a problem.
Concrete posts must be bought in conjunction with the chain link, wires, panels or other fencing material, as they are pre-formed and drilled for particular products and uses, and cannot be altered on site.
Recycled plastic posts
Posts, rails, picket fencing and other fencing components made out of recycled plastic have been available for many years. Plastic fencing has the advantage of durability with no maintenance, and is less attractive to vandals than timber fencing.
Metal posts
The most widely available metal posts are of angle iron, designed for use with chain link fencing. They are supplied with holes drilled for the line wire positions appropriate to the height of the fence. Straining posts are supplied with the necessary fittings for stays, and normally have a base plate. Posts are usually supplied painted with one coat of oxide paint.
Although usually used with chain link, the posts can be used for other types of fencing which can be supported on strained wires. This could include hexagonal mesh, chestnut paling or other materials.
Some chain link systems use tubular steel posts and supports, with either a galvanised or plastic coating finish. Extension brackets can be fitted to support lines of barbed wire for extra height and security.
