Wear overalls, a boiler suit or close-fitting clothing. Loose clothing and scarves are dangerous when working with tools or moving heavy objects.
- Use heavy leather work boots with a good tread, and steel toe-caps to protect the feet. If wellingtons need to be worn, preferably wear the type with steel toe-caps.
- Wear gloves when handling timber treated with creosote or copper/chrome/arsenic. Heavy duty PVC gloves are best for handling creosoted wood, as leather gloves absorb the preservative and become unpleasant to wear. Leather rigger gloves are suitable for handling wire and other fencing work. Special gloves with staple-armoured palms and long gauntlets are available for handling barbed wire.
