Give advance notice of any hedge laying which the public will be able to see, as hedge laying is often misinterpreted as hedgerow destruction. Let the parish council or other local community group know in advance, or write a letter to the local newspaper or parish magazine. Be ready to explain the work if people stop to ask what you are doing. Ironically, it causes less trouble to work out of public view, although the finished product is partly wasted if people cannot see it! Nearly everyone will admire a finished laid hedge, so it is up to you to make sure the process is not misunderstood.
