This chapter stresses the historical interaction of man and nature which has produced today’s landscape and today’s problems and which continues to determine the character of Britain’s waterways and wetlands. Although ‘natural’ aquatic and wetlands ecosystems are often distinguished from those which are ‘man-made’, the two are in fact seldom separate. In this country it is their semi-natural quality which often gives them their most interesting conservation problems and possibilities.
